Why is it important for us, as individuals, to know our own personal core values?
What are the beliefs that are most important to you? Not your spouse, not your friends, not your family members, not your coworkers, but YOUR own personal beliefs.
It’s important to respect other people’s values, but it’s also very important for you to be clear of your own values because they deserve respect also. And sometimes, we are the ones that are disrespecting our own values the most. But this is usually because we are not perfectly clear with what our own core values actually are.
If you don’t know your core values, it can be difficult to make decisions that align with your beliefs. You may find yourself compromising on your principles, or feeling unhappy with choices you have made.
It’s important to take some time to really think about what’s important to you and your life. There may be many values that resonate with you, but narrow it down to you core, your top 3; your non-negotiables.
Once you know your core values, you can start making decisions that reflect them. When you find yourself in a situation, you will be able to clearly see if this situation is congruent with your core values. If it is, then you continue. If it is not, then you walk away. This can be challenging at times, but it is so worth it to live a life that feels true to you.
If you don’t insist on your own values, then people will impose their values onto you. And maybe those values are not what you need for your own personal happiness. Life is too short and precious to be compromising your happiness. Nobody deserves to take that power away from you. So put your foot down, be crystal clear on your core values, and protect them.
